Best Diver: Casio MDV-106 Duro

If you are going to buy one watch in this price bracket, make it the Casio Duro. 200m water resistance, ISO dive watch standards, stainless steel case. The Casio 2784 quartz movement keeps time to ±20 seconds a month & runs for about three years on a battery. Cult status in the watch community, earned fairly, even 15 years after its initial release.
Positives: Build quality, 200m WR, legibility, value | Negatives: Supplied strap is rubbish, lume is weak, marlin-dialled version needs importing (and is costlier).
Best All-Rounder: Casio Edifice EFV-100D
£70-85
Looks like it costs considerably more than it does. Sports-elegant design borrows cues from watches well north of £1,000, quartz movement, 100m WR. The bracelet is the weak point but there are plenty of strap alternatives at the 20mm lug width (and it’s a strap monster, everything goes well with it). Regular rotation in the collection since it was reviewed, which says everything.
Positives: Design, versatility, build quality, value Negatives: Bracelet could be better, not a proper diver, verging on the ‘homage’, if that’s a problem for you.
Best Field Watch: Militado ML08
~£60-70
The ‘Murph’ from Interstellar, for considerably less than the Hamilton original it’s based on. Clean dial, strong visual identity, & a great talking point for any collector who combines an interest in films with an interest in watches.
Positives: Value, design, conversation-starter Negatives: AliExpress sourcing, the usual AliExpress wait-time caveat, a straight ‘homage’ rather than influenced by, a problem for some.
Best Homage Alternative: Tandorio Khaki Field Homage

Best Outdoors Pick: Timex Expedition Traprock Solar

Solar-powered, eco-ceramic case, weighs almost nothing. Surprisingly green credentials for a non-microbrand watch, & an off-the-wall choice if the person you’re buying for has an outdoors streak.
Positives: Solar charging, lightweight, eco-conscious build | Negatives: Case material is more about weight than toughness, worth weighing against the Casio picks above if durability is the priority, 30m water resistance is an odd choice for an outdoor watch.
Best Left-Field Pick: Ollee Watch

Classic Casio aesthetics with a smartwatch twist. A genuinely fresh idea in a bracket otherwise dominated by familiar names, & worth a look if you want something that’ll get a reaction rather than a nod of recognition (just from the watch nerds, obviously)
