Fifty quid doesn’t get you much these days, except in the watch world, where it still buys something genuinely worth wearing. Everything listed below has been hands-on reviewed by WristyBizzle.

The watch James Bond wore in Octopussy (sort of). A digital icon, for about £30.

The AE1200 isn’t a dive watch or a dress watch, it’s a conversation piece that also tells the time reliably for years on a battery. If someone on your list is after their first Casio or just needs a capable beater they can forget about, this is the answer. There’s also an absolute tonne of mod parts available – new face plates, stickers, the lot.

Positives: Price, reliability, cult status, modability (not sure that’s a word – you can mod the life out of this!) | Negatives: Digital-only, nothing horologically fancy going on here, but that’s somewhat the point!

A Hamilton Khaki Field homage from AliExpress for about £30. Clean dial, proper Arabic numerals, simple crown, canvas strap. Genuinely one of the best value field watches we’ve reviewed.

Positives: Value, design, wearability | Negatives: AliExpress sourcing means longer wait times, straight copy rather than influenced by.

Lighter & much, much cheaper than a ‘proper’ diver, and so classed as ‘dive-style’ rather than a true diver (100m WR, not the required 200m), but for everyday wear it’s a cracking watch. Pepsi colourway is eye-catching, case is comfortable, signed buckle is a nice touch at this price. Available direct from Casio & Argos in the UK, which makes it extremely easy to pick up.

Positives: Lightweight, good looks, UK availability, great value. | Negatives: 100m WR only, bezel feels a bit plasticky, lume is underwhelming.

~£25

A great starting point for your mod journey. The W219-H is a basic but fundamentally good-looking digital Casio, available for around £25 from the usual stockists. On its own it’s nothing special, but it’s the perfect blank canvas for a first go at watch modding, strap swapping or otherwise.

If someone on your list has just discovered modding on YouTube, this is where to point them. Make sure they pick up some GooGone, as well (read the review!)

Positives: Price, looks better than it should, easy modding platform | Negatives: Text on the case is a bit much if you’re not getting rid of it, supplied strap is unpleasant against the skin and an ‘odd’ width.
